The Invisible Opt-Out: Turning Passive "Opting Out" into Active Participation

The first time we wrote about No Opt Out this year, Anita Shakya put forward the argument for the “Why” - the moral imperative of the importance of this strategy to ensure all students are learning and no student is left behind due to a lack of confidence or low expectations of them. You can read that post again here to refresh your memory.


This post is going to tackle what can affect the classroom culture and environment for learning you are trying to create: the Passive Opt Out.


No Opt Out is often focused on with regards to effective questioning, which is important but doesn’t address some of the other behaviours being communicated to you in the classroom. 


How many of these behaviours do you notice in the students you teach:

  • Students head is on the desk while you are teaching, and/or during independent work, and/or during AfL task

  • Student hasn’t completed any work after the Do Now

  • Student hasn’t completed any independent work in the last 10 minutes

  • Student is doodling (looks like they’re working from afar)

  • Student is talking-off task whilst everyone else is working independently


This is Passive Opting Out. If we allow these behaviours to happen, we are agreeing that the work/learning is optional for them. 


Changing the lens: Learning is not a suggestion


If you start to shift your lens on these behaviours, from being “defiant” to framing it as a No Opt Out issue your words and expectations will change and it will bring the students with you.


What you are saying is: No Opt Out means you will learn, and produce evidence of your learning.

Don't ask "Are you okay?" (this invites a "No").

Trauma-informed: “I’m just checking in.. what do you need to support your learning right now?”

When appropriate, use a "non-negotiable" prompt: "I need you sitting up in 3, 2, 1... thank you. Pen in hand.”

The "Blank Page" Stare

The Micro-Entry

Lower the barrier to entry. "I’m coming back in 60 seconds. I want to see just the first three words of the sentence starter on the board."

Off-Task Chatter

The Immediate Re-Direct

Don't argue about the talking. Re-state the task: "The task is the diagram on page 4. Show me where you've started."

“What are you stuck on.. Let me help”

“I can see you are stuck, let’s do the first one together”

"I'm Done" (Early Finish)

The Stretch Opt-Out

"Done" is often a form of opting out of the harder, deeper thinking. Always have a "No Opt Out" extension task ready.


The key to this strategy is to “be seen to be looking”: stand where the student can see you looking at their work, check in on them regularly, praise them for doing a little more each time - building their confidence each time. Do not allow the Opting Out to happen/continue for long in the lesson - address it in one way or another.


Circling back to the “Why” - we’re doing this because these behaviours are Opting Out of the classroom community and positive learning environment you are trying to create. By employing No Opt Out in this way you are gently and insistently pulling them back in and saying: “You are part of this, and your work  matters, and I want you in this lesson learning”.

Less Is More: Designing Lessons That Boost Learner Understanding

How long can we realistically expect our students to concentrate in a world of constant notifications, scrolling feeds, and endless digital distractions? 


Attention spans are often described as shrinking, but what we see in classrooms is not a lack of ability to think; it is a struggle to focus when too much competes for limited working memory. This is where Cognitive Load Theory becomes so powerful in shaping effective teaching. Originally developed by John Sweller, Cognitive Load Theory reminds us that working memory is limited. When students are presented with too much information, confusing instructions, or cluttered materials, their mental resources become overwhelmed.


Last term, the Business and Enterprise department paused to reflect on a deceptively simple question: How much content are we actually putting on our lesson slides? What began as a routine discussion quickly became a moment of honest professional reflection. When we looked carefully at our curriculum materials, it became clear that many of our slides were carrying far more information than our students’ working memories could realistically manage. In our effort to be thorough, we had unintentionally made thinking harder to direct.


This realisation brought us back to John Sweller’s Cognitive Load Theory and, in particular, the concept of reducing extraneous load. Extraneous load refers to the unnecessary mental effort caused not by the complexity of the subject itself, but by the way information is presented. Dense text, multiple fonts, unclear instructions, excessive bullet points, and cluttered visuals all compete for attention. Instead of focusing on analysing a balance sheet or evaluating a marketing strategy, students are first forced to decode the slide in front of them. Have a look at an example below: 



What’s the difference between the before and after slide?

  1. Clearer layout and spacing – text is less crowded and easier to read

  2. Simpler design – removes unnecessary images (e.g. video thumbnail, van photo)

  3. More focused visuals – single burger icon supports the context clearly

  4. Improved heading structure – “Think/Write/Pair/Share” is clearly separated

  5. Better emphasis – key words (Aim, Objective, Activities, Task) stand out more

  6. More concise wording – less clutter makes the task clearer


When students understand what they are being asked to do, they are more likely to participate, take ownership of their learning, and experience success.


Reducing extraneous load is especially impactful for SEND students. Many learners with additional needs can be disproportionately affected by cluttered visuals, lengthy instructions, or poorly structured tasks. Simplified layouts, chunked information, consistent formatting, and clear modelling reduce cognitive overload and support processing. These adjustments are not “extra support” for a few; they are inclusive strategies that improve accessibility for all learners.


Ultimately, reducing extraneous load is not about making lessons look simpler; it is about making learning more powerful. When we remove distractions and present information with clarity and purpose, we give every student, regardless of ability, the cognitive space to think, understand, and thrive.


So next time you are planning a lesson, pause and ask yourself: Is this helping students think about the content, or is it making them work hard just to access it?

The case for choral repetition in all subject areas

In MFL, a lot of our time is spent drilling vocabulary - repeating new words and phrases until they stick. This can feel a little mechanical, and it’s not always obvious if students are actually remembering anything. However, I’ve found that choral repetition - asking a whole class to repeat key words in unison - can really help students engage and retain what they’ve learned.

A key benefit of choral repetition is that it encourages a culture of ‘no opt out’. Every student needs to be engaged and listening, every student is expected to attempt an answer, and every student has the chance to learn. It stops us assuming that silence equals understanding and prevents the confident few from taking control. Research shows that actively producing information, rather than just hearing it, strengthens memory and helps students retain knowledge more effectively. It also supports confidence and resilience as students quickly learn that making mistakes out loud is part of learning, and it gives teachers the chance to address whole class misconceptions efficiently.

However, I am definitely aware that achieving 100% participation isn’t always easy, and I’ve had many lessons met with awkward silence and have wondered if a class would ever join in. But I’ve found that with clear routines and consistently high expectations, most students eventually meet you there.

Routines make a real difference. In my Spanish lessons, I use simple cues: Escucha (hand to my ear) and Repite (pointing to the students). This signals exactly when students should respond and helps keep lessons moving. The consistency also helps students feel safe to try, even if they might get it wrong. Over time, most students begin to speak more confidently

Additionally, I’ve found it helpful to encourage engagement with plenty of praise. I regularly award house points to recognise strong effort and good pronunciation or recall. For younger years, turning it into a competition also works well. For example, splitting the class in half and awarding points to the half with stronger pronunciation, pace or effort. Over time, participation becomes more automatic, even when the vocabulary is new or challenging.

While call and response lends itself particularly well to languages, it’s a technique that can work across all subjects. I did a placement at an Ark Academy school last year, and saw it effectively used across the board, with really positive impact. For example, in English, the teacher asked, “Who killed Macbeth?”, counted down, 3, 2, 1… and the whole class answered together. In science, students chorused definitions of key terms in the same way. The energy in the classroom was noticeable, and every student was actively thinking and participating.

When used consistently, call and response helps to keep students actively involved, gives teachers immediate insight into understanding, and turns repetition into a purposeful part of learning rather than a passive routine. Try this out!

Building Foundations: The Power of Knowledge Organisers

There are moments in teaching when we sense the gaps; a concept not quite grasped, a key fact misremembered, a topic that was missed. For some of our students, especially those with SEND, EAL backgrounds, or disrupted schooling, those gaps can feel like walls. 

That’s where knowledge organisers quietly change the game. When we strip learning back to its essentials; the key ideas, vocabulary, or the big picture. We’re not diluting the challenge, we’re clarifying the path. 


For our EAL learners, visuals and concise definitions help unlock language and meaning. For our SEND students, clear structure and repeated knowledge retrieval reduce cognitive load. And for those who’ve missed chunks of education, it’s a lifeline; a way to re-enter learning without shame or confusion. Everyone knows what the core information is and everyone has access to it.


It supports teachers, too. With the core content set out, we plan more purposefully. We can focus on how to teach; because the what is already clear. It creates coherence across lessons, our units and our curriculums.


What does this look like in practice? 

- In RS, we create our organisers or ‘coresheets’ whenever we create a new unit. 

  1. We identify the 30 most important pieces of information for the next six weeks by reviewing our unit plans, assessment criteria, and analysing common misconceptions and high-frequency errors.

  2. Every Do Now and homework task is designed as a retrieval practice activity based on the coresheet. This reflects Rosenshine’s Principles of Instruction, particularly ‘reviewing prior learning’ and ‘providing opportunities for practice and recall’, to strengthen long-term retention.

  3. The coresheet is introduced at the start of the term, and students are explicitly taught how and when to use it (for example, when they are stuck, have missed a lesson, or need to check SPaG). This builds metacognitive awareness, helping students plan, monitor, and correct their own work.

  4. Through regular retrieval tasks and formative assessment (AfL), we gradually encourage students to become less dependent on the coresheet, supporting greater independence and self-management over time.

- In English, Rania Nasihi has created visual knowledge organisers for all the characters in the class readings for that term. 

- In MFL, Adriaan de Waal showed how MFL use a colour coded ‘chatty matt’ to support oracy discussions with key vocabulary and phrases.

Defining Learning at Westminster Academy

As we reflect on our Teaching and Learning practice at Westminster Academy, it is vital that we have a clear, shared definition of what we mean by learning, and that this definition aligns with our school’s unique context and values. At our Academy, we define learning as follows:

Learning is the process by which students actively acquire, consolidate and apply knowledge, skills and behaviours; it involves sustained thinking, purposeful challenge, meaningful feedback and growing independence, leading to the transformative development of the learner as a confident, responsible and curious citizen of the world.

Let’s unpack this definition:

  1. Active acquisition – Learning is not passive. Students must engage: ask questions, probe ideas, try out tasks, make mistakes and refine their understanding.

  2. Consolidation – It isn’t enough simply to present information: learners need time and rich opportunities to embed, rehearse and revisit knowledge so that it becomes fluent and accessible.

  3. Application – Real learning means being able to use what you know and can do in different contexts: solving new problems, reasoning, transferring to unfamiliar situations.

  4. Sustained thinking & purposeful challenge – Learning happens when the work demands cognitive effort: tasks need depth, complexity and the right level of stretch, neither so easy that students coast, nor so hard that they disengage.

  5. Meaningful feedback – Feedback (from teacher, peers, self) is integral: but not just telling the answer. It’s guiding the next step, helping build awareness of what to do and how to improve.

  6. Growing independence – Over time learners become more able to manage their own learning: set goals, monitor progress, select strategies, reflect and self‑regulate.

  7. Transformative development – The outcome is more than retention of facts: students change. They become more confident, responsible, curious, self‑motivated and prepared for lifelong learning and global citizenship.

This is our definition – one that reflects the demands of our context and aligns with the ambition we hold for every student here at Westminster Academy.

How do the WA Pillars support this definition of learning?

Our definition above does not sit in isolation: it is underpinned and given shape by our WA Pillars for Teaching & Learning. These Pillars provide the structure, language and shared expectations that enable our vision for learning to become reality in classrooms across the school. Below I map how each key element of our definition is supported by the pillars.

  • Active acquisition & purposeful challenge
    Climate and Character’ and ‘Success for All’ emphasises challenge and high expectations – ensuring that tasks require deep thinking, that students are encouraged to stretch beyond current comfort zones, and that we avoid simply defaulting to recall tasks. This connects directly to the “active acquisition” and “sustained thinking” elements of learning.

  • Consolidation and application
    The Quality of Instruction’ Pillar focuses on knowledge and skills progression, emphasising that curriculum is sequenced in a coherent way and that students revisit, connect and apply previously taught material. This supports consolidation and ensures students are ready for higher‑order application.

  • Meaningful feedback & dialogue
    The ‘Assess and Adapt’ Pillar emphasises feedback and responsive teaching: the need for formative assessment, timely responses to student work, peer/self‑assessment, and use of assessment tools to refine teaching. This aligns with “meaningful feedback” in our definition.

  • Growing independence
    Again,‘Climate and Character’ and ‘Success for All’ underlines student agency and metacognition: students being taught how to learn, reflect on their learning, regulate their own progress, and take increasingly independent responsibility for their learning. This links directly to our “growing independence”.

By consistently aligning our classroom design, teaching strategies and student experiences with these Pillars, we make our definition of learning tangible.

What Implications Does Our Definition of Learning Have for Teaching Practices at WA?

Given the definition above and how it aligns with our WA Pillars, what does this mean for you as a teacher at Westminster Academy? Here are key implications for teaching practice across our school:

  1. Intentional lesson design that balances acquisition, consolidation and application

    • Plan sequences of lessons where students are not only introduced to new content but given structured time to revisit, rehearse and apply it.

    • Incorporate tasks that require meaningful cognitive effort rather than low‑demand recall alone.

    • Design “application” opportunities: problem solving, real‑world contexts, cross‑disciplinary links.

  2. Ensuring challenge is appropriately pitched — and scaffolded

    • Use prior attainment and ongoing assessment to ensure tasks stretch students but remain accessible with support.

    • Employ scaffolding early on, gradually remove it as students gain fluency so independence grows.

    • Monitor student thinking actively in class (through questioning, mini‑whiteboards, live feedback) so you can adapt challenge in the moment.

  3. Using responsive teaching methods

    • Create opportunities for immediate feedback (teacher, peer, self) and embed follow‑up actions: what will the student do next to improve?

    • Reflect on student work and learning gaps at the end of lessons: adapt subsequent teaching accordingly.

    • Encourage students to reflect: “What did I do well? What could I do better? What will I do next?”

  4. Developing metacognitive skills and student agency

    • Teach students how to learn: how to plan, monitor, evaluate their own learning, and choose strategies.

    • Embed opportunities for independent work where students set their own targets, reflect, and adjust strategies.

    • Foster classroom culture where mistakes are seen as part of learning and where students learn how to respond to challenge constructively.

  5. Promoting wider learner development (confidence, responsibility, curiosity, citizenship)

    • Incorporate tasks which develop students’ confidence (e.g., presentations, group work, pair work).

    • Encourage responsibility: homework tasks that require planning, self‑checklists, peer review.

    • Link learning to civic/global contexts where possible: embed opportunities for students to understand the broader implications of their learning and develop as responsible citizens.

  6. Consistent use of the WA Pillars as an everyday reference point

    • Use the language of the Pillars in your classroom: refer to ‘challenge’, ‘agency’, ‘feedback’, ‘knowledge progression’, ‘whole body listening’, ‘build up to scaffold removal’

    • Share with students how your task connects to a WA Pillar or how the Pillar is supporting their learning journey.

    • Reflect as a department or team: how are our practices across the curriculum aligning with the Pillars and hence supporting our definition of learning?

In essence: our definition of learning demands that teaching in Westminster Academy is purposeful, responsive, challenging, metacognitively aware, and wide‑ranging in its ambition for learners. It means we must consistently design and deliver lessons that do more than cover content: they must build deep understanding, encourage independence, nurture character and equip our students for a rapidly changing world.

Let this shared definition and the WA Pillars guide every lesson, every planning meeting, every piece of feedback and every conversation. In doing so we ensure that every student at Westminster Academy benefits from a coherent, powerful learning experience — one that truly transforms.
