Success for All: Can Metacognition and Self-Management Improve Student Progress?

The Context

If we want success for all, we cannot rely on students “picking up” good learning habits by chance. The students who already know how to plan, monitor and adjust their learning tend to keep getting better. The students who don’t often work harder, not smarter, and fall behind. Even as adults, as professionals, we hit the wall in our “capacity”<  and to overcome this and reach the level, we sometimes need a coach to move across “the edge”. Our students are no different! 


The evidence & research

That is why explicitly teaching metacognition and self-management matters: it helps more students access challenging curriculum and make sustained progress. The strongest school-facing summary of the evidence comes from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). Their guidance on metacognition and self-regulated learning highlights consistent positive impacts when these strategies are taught and embedded, with the EEF toolkit often summarising this as around +7 to +8 months of progress, on average, when implemented well. This is also promising for equity: the EEF notes the potential for metacognition and self-regulation to support disadvantaged pupils when teaching is explicit and carefully scaffolded.


So what does this look like in practice? Metacognition is not simply “thinking about thinking.” In classrooms, it becomes three teachable behaviours:

  1. Planning (What’s the goal? What strategy will I use?)

  2. Monitoring (Is this working? What am I missing?)

  3. Evaluating (What would I do differently next time?)


This aligns with established research on self-regulated learning, where successful learners use forethought, performance monitoring, and reflection to improve outcomes over time.

Self-management strengthens this further. When students learn to manage attention, time, and effort, they can actually use the strategies we teach. That’s why the most effective classrooms combine cognitive strategies with routines that support focus and follow-through: clear success criteria, structured independent practice, and reflection that leads to a specific next step.

Practical classroom tips you can use this week

  • Model the thinking, not just the method. Use “I’m going to…” statements: “I’ll skim the question first, pick the key data, then decide which formula fits.”

  • Teach a simple planning routine. Before tasks: Goal → Strategy → Time. (30 seconds, every lesson.)

  • Build in monitoring prompts. Mid-task checkpoints: “What have you assumed?” “What evidence supports this?” “What’s your next step?”

  • Use retrieval as metacognition. Low-stakes quizzes plus a quick reflection: “Which question surprised you, and what will you do about it?”

  • Make reflection actionable. Replace “What went well?” with: “What will you repeat next time?” and “What will you change?”

Bitesize Research: Fostering Better Metacognition In Lessons

I hope everyone’s having a great week so far! This week, continuing with our theme on student-centred learning for T3, I was really interested in this editorial article about metacognition by Muijs in the Impact publication given by the Chartered College of Teaching. 

Objectives: To outline some of the recent educational research on metacognition and outline some of the strategies to foster better metacognition. 

Summary
  • Muijs argues In the emerging research literature on metacognition, better clarity on the differences between metacognition and self-regulation are required. 
  • This article argues that self-regulation is broader than metacognition, and that in fact, metacognition is a part of self-regulation. Muijs then defines self-regulation as being in three main parts;  cognition, metacognition and motivation. 
  • Metacognition is about ways that learners appraise their learning processes in an ongoing way, and therein purposefully redirect their learning where necessary.
  • Metacognition is not innate and can be deliberately taught and improved using certain teaching strategies that involve planning, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Metacognitive knowledge can also be honed by:
    • Making generalisations or rules in terms of a thinking strategy
    • Deliberating naming the thinking strategy
    • Explaining when and when not to use particular thinking strategies
  • Generic ideas about ‘learning skills’ may be less helpful than subject-specific strategies for metacognition, although there will be some crossover. 

How does this impact me and my practice?:
Some reflection questions arising from this that might be helpful to consider are: 
  • How do I define self-regulation and metacognition?
  • What strategies have I deployed that involve the processes of planning, monitoring and evaluation?
  • What ‘thinking strategies’ do I use with students? How do I get them to explore these and how appropriate they are for certain tasks?

Bitesize Research: Understanding The Impact Of Sport On Student Self-Control And Attainment

I hope everyone has had a great week so far! With the excitement of Sports Day coming up, I was interested in looking at a study from the University of Cambridge in PLOS One in May 2021 that looked at how sports and exercise impact young people’s self-control, and therefore their attainment too.This was a study that looked at the data of 4,000 students across the UK. Objectives: To understand the impact of sports and exercise on student self-control and attainment. Summary: The key findings were:

  • Those students who do more physical activity are more likely to have stronger self-regulation and that this, in turn, has a positive impact on academic outcomes
  • Physical activities found to have the strongest impact are ball sports and swimming. This positive impact on self-regulation and on academic attainment is even more pronounced in disadvantaged children
  • One recommendation from the author was to ‘rethink’ COVID catch-up discussions in line with these findings - maximising classroom time needs balance, as play and sports need to also be prioritised.

Bitesize Research: Using Trauma-Informed Approaches When Working With Students

Following on from some of the training we had in 2020, looking at trauma-informed approaches will be an ongoing theme for the next academic year too. As such, I was interested to look at a pilot from another inner London area (Islington) to see how their schools had used trauma-informed practice to reframe their work with students. We will be using a slightly different set of principles but, for reference, this pilot used the ARC framework (attachment, regulation and competency). Objectives: To understand the possible impacts of using trauma-informed approaches to working with students Summary: The key overall themes are:

  • In the year-long pilot period, where trauma-informed approaches were routinely embedded there were reductions in behaviour incidents, and fewer exclusions and other sanctions
  • Working with vulnerable children became more effective than the practices previously adopted
  • All except one school wanted to continue with the approach after the initial pilot

  • What can I remember about trauma-informed practice and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs)?
  • How have I used previous training on trauma-informed practice to inform my interactions with students this year?

Teaching Study Skills and Encouraging Self-Regulated Learning

"But Miss, I don’t really know how to revise" This question is one that many of us may have heard from our students. When we set revision as a task or a homework assignment, are we confident that the students know how to approach this? With the aim of developing study skills sessions for Year 11 students, I looked into a range of research and practical advice to ensure that revision and independent study are both purposeful and valuable. In her book ‘The Student’s Guide to Exam Success’, Tracey talks of Pareto’s law, which states that the average person draws 80% of their results from only 20% of their effort. Her book gives a range of revision strategies that aim to maximise the results of students from their efforts. This is something that I believe can be achieved by teaching study skills and by reflecting on the ways that we approach independent study and metacognition in our subject lessons.

Teaching study skills With the aim of ensuring that Year 11 students had a greater understanding of a range of revision techniques, note-taking methods, and ways in which to best structure their time I planned a series of TTB presentations that focused on the following themes:

  1. Identifying and fixing exam mistakes
  2. Setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound)
  3. Spaced practice and structuring revision times
  4. Creating an exam timetable
  5. Structuring revision notes using the Cornell Note Taking Method As a classroom teacher, researching these methods has helped me with my own classroom practice, particularly when structuring review and improve lessons, when setting homework tasks and reflecting on the desired impact of these, and when planning and delivering revision lessons. It has also helped me when giving advice and support to students on how best to prepare for assessments.
Using metacognition and self-regulation approaches in our lessons When thinking about which learners revise in the most effective way there is strong evidence that it is often the most self-regulated learners. For many of us, these were also the learners that performed best during lockdown, as they are aware of their own strengths and weaknesses and can thus motivate themselves to engage in, and improve, their learning. The EFF: Metacognition and self-regulation report suggests the use of ‘metacognitive strategies’ can lead to an additional +7 months progress when used well. The report gives 7 recommendations for teaching self-regulated learning and metacognition. Through engaging with research and planning the TTB sessions, I have been able to reflect on how best to facilitate study skills sessions moving forward and how we can encourage students to be self-regulated learners in our teaching. I believe that there is value to teaching study skills in the way that these sessions were facilitated, however in order to achieve the best results these should run alongside lessons where we are using metacognition and self-regulation approaches in our teaching.

  • Would it be beneficial to have a greater emphasis on the teaching of study skills in younger year groups?
  • How can we embed the teaching of study skills so that they are seen as central to learning rather than being an ‘add-on’?
  • What specific strategies can we teach students in our lessons to promote metacognition or ‘learning to learn’?
  • How can we give students opportunities to use these strategies with support, and then independently?
  • How can we ensure we set an appropriate level of challenge to develop pupils’ self-regulation and metacognition in relation to specific learning tasks?

Book Review: Fear is the Mind Killer

The idea of ‘learning to learn’ has been a field of educational theory and practice for some years, that aims to do what it says on the tin: help children get better at learning. This means focusing explicitly on the processes of learning, not simply the content. Within the Science department, we’ve had many discussions over the years about how we could use these principles to ensure we have students who can genuinely think as scientists, and not just parrot abstract facts. 


What is the book about?


Fear is the mind killer is a non-fiction book by Dr James Mannion, a Science teacher-turned education researcher, and Kate McAllister, an experienced Modern Foreign Languages teacher who has recently established her own school in the Dominican Republic. This book tells the story of an ambitious project led by James and Kate to establish a Learning to Learn curriculum at a comprehensive school in Brighton and the various pitfalls, successes and lessons they learned along the way. It also provides an in-depth exploration of the research underpinning the idea of Learning to Learn and practical guidance on how to design and implement a Learning Skills curriculum within any school context. 

Learning to Learn: is it worth it for our students?

Metacognition and the development of skills such as self-regulation are frequently discussed as essential components of creating the independent, self-motivated learners we aspire to have in our classrooms. Moreover the frequently cited Education Endowment Fund (EEF) suggested that metacognition provides a ‘high impact for very low cost, based on extensive evidence’ making it even more appealing for schools to consider integrating into their curriculum. Yet in spite of this, Learning to Learn has faced considerable criticism, with researchers such as Tom Bennett, writing, “Learning to Learn: it isn’t even a thing. We’ve been hoaxed….the hipsters are selling snake oil on this one, whether they know it or not” . The main argument seems that teaching generic skills in the absence of subject knowledge is misguided and is not worth classroom time, and could even, “erode [the] belief that young people need subject knowledge”. Indeed there are several examples where metacognitive interventions based on ‘learning to learn’ have tried and failed to have a measurable impact on the learning in classrooms. 


The authors James and Kate are fierce advocates of the power of a Learning Skills curriculum and tackle these arguments head-on by putting Learning to Learn ‘on trial’. Not only does this help provide a clear and balanced understanding of the arguments for and against Learning to Learn but it helps explain the deeper meaning of points which we have regularly seen taken out of their original context in recent years. 


A prime example of this is cognitive scientist Daniel T. Willingham, author of Why Don’t Students Like School? whose point that “factual knowledge must precede skill” was embraced by Michael Gove and Nick Gibb and used to justify the prioritisation of a ‘knowledge-rich curriculum’, based on memorisation and learning of facts. As a science teacher I’m well aware of the requirement for students to learn certain concepts off by heart, to provide them with tools to solve more complex scientific problems, however the idea of students simply ‘knowing’ lots of facts being evidence of good learning always seemed too simplistic. Willingham had actually explained that he believed facts should be taught, “ideally in the context of skills” and that “we want our students to think, not simply to memorise...our goal is not simply to have students know a lot of stuff- it’s to have them know stuff in service of being able to think effectively” . As Mannion and McAllister point out, this “reveals a more sophisticated understanding of the relationship between knowledge and skills than these politicians acknowledge” and they argue the true aim should be to create a Learning to Learn curriculum which runs alongside and is “intertwined with a knowledge-rich, subject-based curriculum”. This shows how ideas within education can be subject to ‘lethal mutations’ and how essential it is as teachers and school leaders to do our homework, understand the limitations of educational studies, and appreciate that every school context is unique and to take caution with accepting or dismissing ideas too readily. 


My conclusions


Overall it was fascinating to read about how the Learning to Learn curriculum at Sea View was designed, implemented and how it has evolved over the past 15 years. The intervention itself involved elements of ‘Philosophy for Children’, oracy, project-based learning and self-regulatory activities, such as time to journal. The curriculum was designed to provide students with opportunities to put skills into practice, such as having the chance to actively communicate by deciding on a team research project, as opposed to just sitting through a teacher-led lesson on teamwork. From the early-doors challenge of putting together a team of like-minded teachers to drive the project at its inception, to the challenges of allowing students to feel frustrated and resolve situations for themselves when teamwork breaks down during a project, it was brilliant to read such an in-depth account of such a complex school-wide intervention. If you are interested in seeing a fantastic example of a school taking a huge leap of faith to help benefit their students holistic development I highly recommend Fear is the Mind Killer as an interesting, well-researched read.

Bitesize Research: Metacognition and Student Progress

This week, with metacognition being a key TTB theme, I wanted to share with you the work of the EEF on metacognition


Objectives: To understand the role of metacognition (‘learning to learn’) and self-regulated learning in improving student progress and attainment.


Summary:  

  • Metacognitive and self-regulation approaches made a large impact on student attainment - up to 7 months ahead additional progress when compared with their peers. 

  • Strategies for metacognition and self-regulation worked best when taught in collaborative groups - i.e. when students could make their thought processes clear through discussion. 

  • There is particularly strong evidence that teaching metacognitive and self-regulation strategies to low-achieving older students is especially effective.


How does this impact me and my practice?: Some reflection questions arising from this that might be helpful to consider are: 

 

  • Which explicit strategies can you teach your pupils to help them plan, monitor, and evaluate specific aspects of their learning? How do these specifically look in your subject? 

  • How can you promote, model and develop metacognitive talk related to your lesson objectives?
